Chapter 20

Surprise Attack

Lisa woke up and looked at the clock. It read 6:45 am. She sighed and wished she could snuggle under the down-filled comforter and go back to sleep. She yawned and sat up, being careful not to disturb Maria. This was her morning to get up by 7:00 am to look after the children. They all took turns getting up early in the morning with them. They weren’t taking any more chances of a repeat of Amanda’s pancake experiment. These children woke up with the chickens, no matter what time they went to bed. She reached over and turned off the alarm so it wouldn’t wake Maria. She shivered in the chill air. Whichever adult got up first went straight down to the basement and put more wood in the furnace. It heated the house up nicely. They turned off the heat vents that went to the unused rooms, so the rest of them heated up quickly. She pulled her clothes on, put on thick socks and slipped on her tennis shoes. She left the room and quickly went downstairs to the kitchen. As she passed by the coffee pot, she flipped it on. One rule in this house was to make sure the coffee pot was clean, filled with water, and fresh coffee grounds added so it was ready for morning. She also turned a burner on low under the teapot to heat water. Abby like to drink teas and was an early riser. Abby had stopped drinking coffee all together.

Once in the basement, she opened the furnace and pulled down on the large handle that made the ashes fall into the bottom ash pan and added three pieces of wood. She turned the damper down again and went back upstairs. Mark said this place was very well insulated and that the furnace was efficient. They only put wood in three times a day; early in the morning, in the afternoon and again around 9:00 or 10:00 pm at night. The whole house stayed toasty warm. Mark said when the snow started, they’d probably have to use more wood. The men had been chopping wood as fast as they could. Who knew how much it was going to take for a whole winter? None of them had used wood heat before, so it was hard to know how much to have on hand.

She grabbed a cup, filled it with coffee, and sat down at the table. Today Mark and Eric were going to clean the weapons they got from those assholes that had kidnapped Ryan. The men wanted the weapons in top shape; then they were going to teach the women, Chris and Ryan how to shoot and load each weapon.
